By Cardenio. March, 1798.
- Hail early bird, thou gentle songster, hail!
- One of the foremost of the feather'd throng;
- To bring the joyful news of winter past,
- And nigh approach of joy inspiring spring,
- Soon as Aurora smiles along the east,
- And bluffing mounts the gold-bespangled sky;
- Thy mating lay salutes my list'ning ear;
- I hear the song salute the rising morn,
- And warbling chant the grateful hymn of praise.
